Lower United Methodist Church

Joint Evening Prayer Service

Christ Church Parish is looking forward to helping Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield, Virginia celebrates the 300th anniversary of the church building that they call home. The Vestry of Christ Church Parish was responsible for the construction of the "Lower Chappell" which was finished in 1717 and used it as one of three locations in the county to hold worship services. After the disestablishment of the Anglican Church as the State Church in 1786, many churches were left vacant. Fortunately, the Methodist began using Lower Chapel as a place of worship and it was purchased from Christ Church Parish in the early 1800's.

To celebrate this history that we share in this building, we are joining our choirs and congregations to celebrate this milestone for this sacred worship space.

On October, 4th at 6:00 p.m. we will have a service similar to one that would have been used during its first 120 years.

We will be using the liturgy from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England. The Reverend Stuart Clary Wood, the Priest-in-Charge of Christ Church Parish Episcopal, will lead us in worship. We will also honor the lives of two Anglican priests, John and Charles Wesley, who were founders of the Methodist Movement. The Rev. Ileana Rosario from Lower UMC will bring the message. Members of both choirs will join in chanting the Psalm and the two canticles known as the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis. This will be a wonderful worship experience for the whole community. Please join us.
